Insomnia

#NaPoWriMo #GloPoWriMo Day 26

Book cover for Charles Kingsley. The Water Babies.

The dark night lies
Entangled in my hair
Shadows seep into the sheets
Creeping, crawling, never still
Deafening, the heartbeats
Under the silent assault
Of creatures from beyond
Conspirators, scheming in delight
Cheering on my insomnia!

The twisted blade buries
Deep in my brain
Carving dreary silhouettes
Watching me from the doorway
Tormented, I lie wide awake
Wishing the nocturnal pain away
Gnawing at my eye sockets
The visions continue to laugh
Mocking my insomnia!

A discarded thought scurries
On my fluttering eyelids
Sneaking in forgotten stories
From cracks in the windows
Astonished, I am at the scenes
That demolish my dreams
Where were these hidden until now
Voices, images, resentment, regrets
Accomplices of my insomnia!

The Moon is me

The Sun inspires and speaks of brightness and ambition but I am always drawn to the Moon because of its transient quality and the ability to shine through the darkness. I see in it a reflection of human life – the indomitable spirit to attain glory even when destined to cyclic highs and lows. The Moon is me; it is each one of us. Here is an ode to resilience.

Moon rising from behind the clouds. Image generated using dream.ai.

In the swirling, shifting caramel of dawn
Goodbyes of the Full Moon awaken me
With gentle caresses; in silver disguise
Strings of glimmer blaze past the drapes
In to a space where sleep plays truant
Yet, again.

Moonstruck, I gaze at the sparkly face
Shimmering in the celestial expanse
My friend of many slumberless nights
I wonder how you waltz through it all –
The waxing and waning, here today
Unseen tomorrow!

Do you tremble when pieces dissolve
Or when the dark side overtakes you
How do you tiptoe through desolate fear?
Sailing on stormy clouds; only to evolve
From Night’s blue veil, in splendor whole
Perfection galore!

Amazed, I ponder over your dire destiny
Patiently cradling oblivion and agony
You’ve known fawning painters, poets;
How do you concede to Time’s sly games
Embracing both radiance and gray shades
Always with eternal grace!

Night

Consume me whole
Like the ocean gulps down
That flamboyant orb
Easing its pain
The lavish burn from within
Letting it settle
Amongst corals and pearls
In a soothing embrace
The ashes submerge
Then slowly emerge
In a million starlights
Flickering silica spreads
Across a sleeping world

Sleepless

#SeptemberFalls22

Noctiflorous thoughts
Weave gossamer webs
Dreams lay entangled
In the silver threads
Droopy eyelids await
Slumber so deep
To serenade visions
To surrender to sleep
Yet, destined to a night
Drowned in the aroma
Of frantic wild petals
Wilting at sunrise

Dawn

In the fleeting darkness
Only dreams survive
On the chariot of dawn
That rises from the ashes
Of a horizon in cinders
Lost to the dying lights
Of lonely burning skies!
The dark broom of night
Sweeps away stardust
From under the canopy
Of a dazzling firmament
Slowly lost in the distance
